Can You Eliminate Those Unaesthetic Areas?

July 31, 2017

Our practice has been in the Bradford, Massachusetts section of Haverhill since 1960. We still treat patients whom my dad treated when he started the practice. And those patients still have their own teeth! But as people age, they get “long in the tooth”. That means their gums recede and spaces are created between the teeth. These spaces manifest as the dreaded “black triangle”. A 2001 study showed that 1/3 of all patients exhibited some unsightly black triangles. Patients are always asking if we can eliminate those unaesthetic areas.

My Wife is Doing Invisalign!

March 28, 2017

I never thought it would happen.

My wife grew up with several siblings and never had orthodontic treatment. Her teeth are not unhealthy or unsightly, but some crowding on both top and bottom teeth has started. It took a fair bit of convincing, but I started her Invisalign (invisible braces) treatment last month.

I wanted a few weeks of her wearing the clear retainers before I dared declare success, but she is well on the way to straighter teeth.

There are less than two months left in 2015, with the holidays right around the corner.

Dental work is never high on people’s priorities, but annual insurance benefits expire for most policies at the end of the calendar year.

And don’t forget about your Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Accounts (HSA).

So use them or lose them.

Whether you were thinking of whitening your teeth,  straightening them with Invisible Braces (Invisalign), or taking care of that crown restoration you have been putting off, now is the time to call our office.

We would be happy to discuss your remaining benefits with you.

Dentistry 101

Dentistry has changed a lot in 24 years since I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. My late father is also a Penn graduate (1957). He started our practice in 1960 after serving as a dentist in the US Navy.

Tooth drilling (preparation) was very aggressive, leaving thin, weakened portions of enamel suceptible to fracture.Today, tooth preparation and cavity filling is very conservative, quick, and can often be done without anesthesia (novocaine).

Filling materials are prettier, stronger and easier to place than previous generations of esthetic or tooth-colored materials.

Success and longevity of any dental work is still, however, contingent on the patient’s ability to keep plaque off of the teeth and gums. Proper brushing and flossing (prevention) is the best way to  minimize risk for dental caries (cavities) and gingivitis (red puffy gums).
