As we continue to meet new families in our practice, we are frequently asked, “When should I bring my kid to the dentist?”
We are a general dental practice which treats patients from 2-102. We actually had a patient, Herb, years ago who had a functional dentition at age 102! And we also are treating a family of 4 generations that has been coming to our Haverhill office for over 50 years.
We are not a specialty Pedodontic Dental practice, but you do not need to bring your child to a pediatric dentist. Our general practice treats kids every day. We provide cleanings, x-rays, fluoride treatments, sealants and fillings.
Yes, kids still get cavities.
So, when should your child visit the dentist?
The AMA recommends at age 1!
We find this to be appropriate only if there is an older sibling already in the practice. But, realistically, age 1 is a stretch. Even a 2 year-old has a hard time staying in the chair.
Our recommendation is between 2 ½ and 3 years of age. We often ask the parent to bring the child, if possible, with an older sibling, or even a grandparent, to their visit. We met a 3 year-old last week who came in with his mom and grand-mom, both of whom are long time patients.
And you don’t want to wait until your child has a dental emergency. You should schedule your child’s regular check-up so they at least have some familiarity with our office setting.
